Black bear
close to us more than any others
In another set of circumstances we could be brothers
Live with us
Frighten us
bug us and
enlighten us
Bear
In culinary terms we’re almost the same
you’ll go for rotten garbage but we’re the ones to blame
As we co-habitate
You’ll be nature’s magistrate
to keep us in line
Black Bear
Out there
Constantly near us
We’ve become neighbours
In the
back yard
each year
my dad harvests apples
before the bears
take them all
every fall
cooler’s an easy read
when you’ve got cubs to feed
Black Bear
Omnivore
Maternal sow
Powerful boar

Haliaeetus leucocephalus

White headed salt eagle perched atop your ancient home.
Your eyrie is a stick fortress that over years has greatly grown
Mountain and ocean view the cut of where you’ve flown
Pseudotsuga menziesii reaching for a radiant sky.
While Galileo was describing material strength it was a potential of extraordinary length
I know you as a fish reaper descending from the sky
I know you as cheep go getter thieving as you fly
I know you as a beach keeper under watch of statued eye
Chicks atop Picea sitchensis
Waiting for a parent as a down pore breaks and drenches
everything is touches flowing into dark grey blues
it feeds the average mean and the chlorophilian hues
Is the raven misbehaving, intruding on your haven?
Or is it the other way? Will they fight until you cave in?
Standing your tree upon Pinus contorta
you like to start a brawl but you cannot afford a
hurt wing or anything and so once you’re at a loss
you’ll go home and line with the eyrie with some gathered moss
or gain some altitude and show the sky you’re the boss

Orcinus orca

Killer Whale brought up on pollution
Killer Whale you have no milk substitution
Wrath of man, is it malice or confusion?
Killer Whale are your young ones feeling thirsty
In the wild you have shown restraint for all your powers
Jaws of death we have been at your mercy
Killer Whale, but not like you have been at ours
Is there grief there? does it take all your will to keep going?
Our momentum ratchets out of hand and now its showing
In suspension, luminescent ocean patterns flowing
And we can grieve together.

Oncorhynchus kisutch

You were born in the midst of a dream
In an otherwise serene, nightmare of a stream
One of two thousand siblings, you were hatched
with a little red yolk sack already attached
Tiny dancing Alevin in the current’s drive
you had to do what you could just to survive
When your yolk was gone you became a Fry
and you had to start hunting to become a bigger guy
plankton and larvae the bulk of your diet
you couldn’t fight the current and wouldn’t even try it
avoiding predators from the land, air and sea
you’d become a little more camo’ but you’d never free
well you made it through stream life and then decided to bolt
and you swam to the ocean a handsome young Smolt
Coho. Little Coho
Oh life in the ocean along with some friends
every day a new struggle you never now where it ends
There are plenty of fish out there in the sea
Some want to eat you and some you will eat
You would swim a great distance with the elite
You would keep on going, never accepting defeat
Remember that time you were chased by a pod
You used your best maneuvers and made eyes with your God
You’re cousin chinook is their dietary pillar
but you barely avoided becoming Orca stomach filler
Now you know why they call those Delphinidae Killer
Coho. Ocean going cohoing Coho
Feel the urge
Just let it surge
Let it consume you
This is your destiny
Anadromous instinct your birth stream ahead
Through bears and waterfalls you pressed on to your bed
You’re nose hooked down and your skin turned red
You fertilized many and slipped into your final rest
But you have no regrets that spawngasm was the best
You’re just a sex crazed Coho

She is a young girl alone for the very first time.
Her mother dismissed her to make room for the next in line
Its a brave new world for her but she’ll do just fine
She’s equipped to kill, motionless in the salal, cedar, fir and pine
Eyes of the bush
Ghost in the undergrowth
She stalks her prey and strikes with explosive force
Then crushes their wind pipe her blood painted face shows no remorse
She patrols her range crepuscule time spent alone
which will remain static until she has cubs of her own

Marmota vancouverensis

I don’t know much about the Vancouver Island Marmot
I might have seen one once but it could have been a number of other things
It’s unlikely I’ll ever see one now
As their numbers fade
their ghosts will ask us…
What have we done?

Sea anemone, you’ve always been a friend to me
staring at the ocean sharing thoughts telepathically
I feed you mussels and other little things I find
and you give me your immutable attention and time
Oh the turning of the tide
a tiny universe where all the natural laws reside and are applied
and we abide
the sea anemone and I
Elegantly vibrating waiting to be sated
Alongside parts of you that have separated
your pink hues echo the colours of the sky
and glowing greens pacify my eyes
